NotesFromFern

We have started our summer schedule at 9:30 A.M. and going into a slower gear for summer time. Weekly choir rehearsals have ended until the end of August, but the choir (those who are available) will sing during June and July. I very much appreciate their willingness to do that. We will be looking for volunteers to provide special music during August. Now is your chance – please speak to me if you are interested in helping in this way.

I need to go back to our Hymn Festival on May 15 and thank many of you. First of all the choir, who spent extra rehearsal time to prepare; soloists, Curtis Ballenger, Susan Patterson, Kris Sneeringer and Shari Telaar; Lee Reynolds for her help in directing and playing the piano; bell ringers, Gaye Mizell and Carol Heyde; and again Gaye Mizell who coached the speakers, made sure the costumes and props were ready and then played the tambourine; trumpeters Al Black and David Smith; and last but not least those who took part as hymn writers and told their stories: Al Black, Curtis Ballenger, Steve Korris, Linda Lockhart, Brock Lodde, Dave Mizell, Betty Murphy, Conner Plufka, Steve Sneeringer, Bob Tuckett, Bruce Williams, and our real thespian , Pastor Zac Sturm. I must not forget those we needed to make our work succeed: the hospitality committee for the reception and the volunteers who arranged and rearranged the sanctuary. Thank you one and all!

It is my hope and prayer that this musical encounter (and as we experience it every Sunday) will help us to realize that the impact of words and music is far greater than that of either alone.

On February 7, Fern's brother Frederick Sewell added beauty to our music with his violin. The first selection below is the anthem for the day;  the other four are the movements of Sonata IV for piano and violin by Handel.

During the weeks after Easter, we used the less familiar seventh setting from the new hymnal, with Spanish tempos and melodies. You can hear the music here.

On May 31, 2009, the choir sang a wonderful  selection of spirituals --- listen to them here.
